Check Engine Light On: Keep Driving or Call a Tow?
A check engine light can mean a loose gas cap or a serious problem. Here is how to tell the difference and decide whether to drive to a shop or stop and call a tow.
Few dashboard warnings cause as much uncertainty as the check engine light. Sometimes it means almost nothing; sometimes it means stop now. Knowing how to read the situation can save your engine — and your wallet.
Solid light vs. flashing light
The single most important detail is how the light is behaving.
- Steady, solid light: Usually indicates a non-emergency issue. The car has detected something worth checking, but you are often okay to drive carefully to a shop. Causes range from a loose gas cap to a sensor reading out of range.
- Flashing or blinking light: Treat this as urgent. A flashing check engine light typically signals an active engine misfire that can quickly damage expensive components like the catalytic converter. Do not keep driving. Pull over safely and stop.
If the light is flashing, that alone is a strong reason to call for a tow rather than risk further damage.
Check the easy things first
With a solid light and a car that is driving normally, it is worth a quick, safe check:
- Make sure your gas cap is tight — a loose or cracked cap is a surprisingly common cause. Tighten it; the light may clear after a few drives.
- Note whether anything feels or sounds different — power loss, rough idling, new noises, or smells.
Watch for the warning signs that mean "stop"
Regardless of whether the light is solid, pull over and call for help if you notice:
- Overheating (temperature gauge climbing into the red)
- Loss of power or the car struggling to accelerate
- Smoke or a burning smell
- Strange noises like knocking or grinding
- Leaking fluids under the vehicle
